Group Urges Payment For Health Workers Killed By Ebola

By Robert Dixon

MONROVIA, April 10 (LINA) -The National Health Workers Association of Liberia (NAHWAL) is calling on government to pay the death benefits of two health workers who died of the Ebola virus to their widows and children.

Addressing a news conference in Monrovia Thursday, NAHWAL Secretary General George Poe Williams also called on the government to pay the arrears owed the health workers who were volunteers and not on government payroll.

“It is saddening to note that the two deceased just as all of the other volunteers who are only surviving on incentives, were not paid for the months of February and March 2014,” Williams said.

He also regretted that as volunteer workers, Robinson Lenden and James Daah, who died while trying to save lives, did not have medical or death benefits and social security coverage.

“Regrettably, above all, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has no policy to provide benefits for this category of workers in such a situation,” Williams lamented.

Meanwhile, the NAHWAL Secretary General has recommended that measures be put in place to ensure that health workers who have worked hard over time to keep the Liberian people and nation healthy must be sufficiently protected.

He also called on authorities of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to make use of trained and licensed Liberian laboratory technicians for conducting Ebola tests to avoid waste of limited resources.
