Urey Challenges AMEU Students

By Richard Stephens

MONROVIA, April 5 (LINA) -A Liberian business man-turned-politician, Mr. Benoni Urey, has challenged students of the African Methodist Episcopal University  (AMEU) on Camp Johnson Road in Monrovia to be disciplined in their quest to acquire education.

He said students are the future leaders of any nation and as such, they must exhibit discipline in handling issues, especially those that are state-related.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Mr. Urey’s statement was contained in a speech delivered Friday on his behalf by a proxy at an occasion marking the official launch of a US$250,000 scholarship fund drive by the AMEU 15th graduating senior class held on the institution’s campus on Camp Johnson Road.

Mr. Urey pointed out that quality education ensures economic viability and political stability in any nation and therefore, urged the students to always be law-abiding and strive for quality education

The Liberian businessman donated US$1,500 as his initial contribution towards the scholarship fund drive, and promised to work with the student government to ensure its success.

The senior class leadership said it needs more than US$200,000 to help keep in school their colleagues who are currently out of school because of financial reasons.

More than 500 students of the University are said to be out of school this semester due to financial constraints.

Meanwhile, several invitees at the occasion pledged their support to the student leadership.
