36-Year-Old Land Dispute Resolved in Nimba

Wellington Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, April 3 (LINA) -A violent land dispute that lasted 36 years in the Doe Administrative District in Nimba County has been resolved, District Commissioner Sam Napa Weh has disclosed.

Weh said the land crisis between the Doumpa Township and the Zoa Town in the district began 1978, but later turned violent in 2008, when aggrieved communities destroyed properties, brutalized community residents and resorted to gun battle that wounded several innocent citizens.

He said over 50 rice kitchens were burnt, several acres rubber damaged and cattle destroyed in the process, with losses estimated at over L$50, 000,000.00.

Addressing a cross-section of journalists on Thursday in Sanniquellie, Mr. Weh said numerous attempts were made by Superintendents Fulton Dunbar in the 70s,  Robert Kamei in 2004, Edith Gongloe Weh in 2008, Senator Prince Yormie Johnson and former representative P. Edwin Gaye,  among others to resolve the conflict to no avail.

However, on Saturday, March 29, the two rival communities amicably resolved their differences and agreed to reunite and abandon the disputed land for the construction of a district peace center and a cash crop production center.
