MONROVIA, Dec 6 (LINA) -The National Port Authority (NPA) says it is on the verge of moving to 24 hours operations at the Free Port of Monrovia, the country’s largest port facility.

Deputy NPA Managing Director for Administration, Nyekeh Forkpa, said this is necessary to enhance trade and commerce to ensure economic growth.

Addressing a Communication Team Outreach Working Session Friday at the Ministry of Information, Mr. Forkpa disclosed that the NPA has already installed navigational aids at the port to facilitate the process.

He said tests carried out on the navigational aids have proven positive and as soon as discussions with APM Terminal-Liberia are finalized, the 24-hour operations will commerce.

He also indicated that modalities are being worked out to reduce the time it takes customers to process documents to remove their goods from the port.

The NPA Deputy Managing Director emphasized that reducing the time for port users to process their documents will cut cost, and eventually lead to the reduction of burdens on clients.

In a related development, the NPA Deputy Managing Director has announced plans to relocate the Southeastern Port of Harper in Maryland Country.

Forkpa said the private land on which the port is situated is small, and as such it will be difficult to expand it for full scale operations.
