Pres. Sirleaf Calls For Investment To End Hunger In Liberia

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, May 16 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has stressed the need for investment in the agriculture sector to end hunger in Liberia.

She stated that Liberia has the potential to grow more food and export it in the sub-region and other parts of the world.

President Sirleaf made the statement Tuesday when she launched Liberia's Zero Hunger Strategic Review Report at a program held at the Monrovia City Hall.

She noted that for Liberia to attain zero hunger by the year 2030, it will require the collective efforts of all Liberians and international partners with technical support for farmers.

She urged Liberians to take advantage of the country’s abundant rainfall and vast fertile land to engage in sustainable agriculture, rather than be satisfied with importing food.

President Sirleaf noted that Sustainable Development Goal Number Two seeks to end hunger and achieve food security, including improving nutrition as well as promoting sustainable agriculture, and Liberia cannot be an exception.
