Boakai Sees UP As ‘Unstoppable’ Come October Elections

By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, May 14 (LINA) – In the wake of a huge endorsement of his presidential bid by 19 Senators of the National Legislature, Vice President Joseph Boakai has described the Unity Party (UP) as ‘unstoppable’ in the upcoming general and presidential elections scheduled for October.

On Thursday, May 11, a total of 19 out of the total of 30 sitting senators endorsed the presidential candidacy of Boakai, who is currently the political leader of the ruling UP, making it the first of its kind and an unprecedented undertaking in the political history of Liberia.

Among several reasons for their endorsement, the senators said that having observed and closely interacted with Boakai, they found him to be stable, peaceful, humble, and accessible at all times in dealing with people of all classes in carrying out his duties as Vice President of Liberia and President of the Liberian Senate.

But Boakai, making remarks at the ceremony which was held on the grounds of the Capitol Building, the seat of the National Legislature, said that the verdict by the 19 Senators to support his political bid means that "nothing can stand in the way of the UP."

"You may see 19 senators, but there are 15 counties fully represented here, and I can tell you that each of these senators carry a lot of weight," Boakai said.

The Vice President, in his usual diplomatic tone, urged the remaining eleven Senators to follow suit by joining his team so that they can together deliver the future of Liberia to the people of the nation.

Calling his endorsement by the senators "An undeserved favor and honor," Boakai emphasized that he stand not to claim all of the praises bestowed upon him, but noted that he was gratified for the demonstration of love, support and love for country exhibited by the senators.

"You may say a lot of things about Liberia, but Liberians are good people, Liberians are people who will continue to enjoy the benefits of their country because of the love that they have in their hearts," Boakai noted.

Boakai is of the opinion that Liberia can become the best country in the world and a favorable destination for economic activities if Liberians think Liberia, love Liberia and express their desire to build Liberia together.
