Voter Role Update Ends in Bong County

By Ballah Kollie, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, March 29 (LINA) - The Bong County office of the National Elections Commission (NEC) has announced the completion of the Voter Roll Update (VRU) in the county with 5,230 persons registered.

NEC Senior Magistrate in the County, Mr. Daniel Newland, said the 5,230 persons who registered during the entire exercise fell short of the initial target of 10,000.

Mr. Newland told the Liberia News Agency that the registered persons came from four electoral districts, which comprise the eight administrative districts with 76 Voter Roll Up-date or VRU Centers in upper Bong.

Mr. Newland praised the level of cooperation received from local leaders as well as implementing and funding partners.

“Not reaching our expected target does not mean that citizens did not take advantage of the exercise. It only shows that our expectation was more than the reality on the ground. However, we got more than 50 percent of the targeted figure,” he noted.

Mr. Newland disclosed that the exhibition of individuals registered during the process is the next exercise intended to validate and legitimize those registered before the day of election.

NEC recently initiated a 45-day Voter Roll Update exercise was intended to register persons who have reached the age of 18 since the last elections in 2011, those who have relocated from one part of the country to another and those who have lost their voter card.

The VRU process is intended to provide citizens the right to vote in this year’s Mid-Term Senatorial Election slated for October.
