NPHIL, MOCI Begin Mapping Packaged Drinking Water

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, May 9 (LINA) - The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) have begun a joint inspection and mapping of packaged drinking water in Liberia.

According to NPHIL Deputy Director General for Administration, Henry A. Blake, the joint inspection and mapping exercise of packaged drinking water will last for 30 days.

Director Blake observed that lack of safe drinking water is leading to unwarranted deaths in Liberia, noting that several Liberians are dying from water-borne diseases which can be prevented, if proper regulations and measures are put in place to ensure safe drinking water production.

The Deputy NPHIL boss made the statement Monday at a technical meeting of technicians for the inspection and mapping exercise of packaged drinking water held at the Ministry of Health in Congo Town, outside Monrovia.

He explained that the inspection and mapping process requires the collective efforts of the various government ministries and agencies within the water sector, as well as communities to prevent unsafe drinking water in the country.Director Blake stressed that issues relating to safe drinking water will be given 40 percent priority of the public health budget to ensure that Liberians drink safe water.
