Jhpiengo Chief Nudges Midwives To Remain Focused

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, May 9 (LINA) - The Chief of Party of the Maternal Child Survival Program at Jhpiego, Madam Maron Subah, has challenged midwives in Liberia to remain focused in their profession.

Madam Subah stated that the midwifery profession is vital in the health sector to ensure that pregnant women and their babies are safe during child birth.

She made the statement at the weekend during the celebration of International Midwives Day by the Liberia Midwives Association (LMA). The program was held in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

She noted that 350,000 pregnant women die annually around the world and two million new born babies also die annually from child birth-related problems.

Madam Subah stressed that midwives and midwifery play an essential role in the health delivery system of any nation, noting that Liberians should support and improve midwifery care in the country.

She pointed out that Liberia is blessed with traditional midwives who have made significant contribution to the country’s health delivery system.

The celebration, which was organized by the LMA in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), brought together midwives from across the various counties.
