WB Consults On New Pathways In Liberia

By Ballah M. Kollie

MONROVIA, May 9 (LINA) – As the Country Partnership Strategy of the World Bank comes to an end this year, the bank has commenced the Systematic Diagnostic Consultations (SCD) with stakeholders in the country.

The consultation will enable the bank to identify constraints and a pathway for achieving the twin goals of eradicating extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in the country.

The disclosure was made Tuesday by World Bank Liberia Country Manager Larisa Leshchenko during a Media Dialogue held at the bank’s office located in the Monrovia suburb of Congo Town.

She revealed that the SCD will also help the bank in formulating its new country partnership framework to be built on the availability of resources and that it will guide the engagement of the bank with Liberia over the next five to seven years.

According to the World Bank Liberia Country official, the consultation was launched in Ganta last Friday, May 5, and crossed over to Grand Bassa County with Civil Society Organizations, academia and the private sector attending and making meaningful inputs.

Meanwhile, fragile and conflict-affected states in Africa are poised to receive opportunities in lending.

The latest is an outcome of the recent World Bank and IMF Spring Meeting held in Washington DC.

According to Leshchenko, the International Development Association will do the lending through the private sector Development Window with focus on growth, jobs, skills, basically boosting economic growth relevant for Liberia.

“Lots of focus will be placed on agriculture and energy,” she emphasized.
