Bong Police Re-arrest 5 Prison Escapees

By Philip T. Singbah, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, April 30 (LINA) - The Bong County Police detachment has rearrested five of the twenty-one inmates who recently escaped from the Gbarnga Central Prison.

The Chief Superintendent of the local police detachment, Fredrick Nepay, told the Liberia News Agency that the men were rearrested in Gbarnga and some adjacent communities through the help of community members.

Nepay named those rearrested as Stanley Gbacon, Abu Konneh, Edwin Yarkpawolo, Sekou Sheriff and Momue Willie.

He explained that Konneh, Sheriff and Willie were sentenced for Armed Robbery, while Stanley Gbacon and Edwin Yarkpawolo are being detained for burglary and theft of property.

Nepay said consultations are continuing with community residents in Gbarnga and other parts of Bong County to ensure that the other inmates are rearrested.

On April 5, 21 inmates, including seven convicts and 14 pre-trail detainees, escaped from the Gbarnga Central Prison after they were brought outside of their holding cells for what the prison officials called “sun bath”.

The inmates assaulted correction officers while trying to escape and made away with several telephones and other valuables.
