AFL Inducts Collins As Officer Cadet

By Ballah M. Kollie

MONROVIA, April 27 (LINA) – The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL)Thursday admitted into service 22-year-old Scott Amos Collins as “Officer Cadet”.

Colllins’ admission qualifies him for a four-year degree at the prestigious West Point Military Academy in the United States of America.

Dating back to 1988 when two Liberians last attended the prestigious West Point Military Academy, the young Liberian becomes the first in 29 years.

He is also one of the international nominees from 161 countries around the world to gain admission to the United States Military Class of 2021, which starts in July 2017.

Affirming the oath of admission performed by Deputy Defense Minister for Administration, Joseph F. Johnson, Cadet Collins promised to at all-times support, defend the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia against all enemies; foreign and domestic and will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.

“I will obey the orders of the President of the Republic of Liberia and the orders of all superior officers according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice,” he pledged.

Upon the completion of the four-year degree program in addition to military regimentation and upon returning to Liberia, Collins will be commissioned by the president as a junior officer in the Armed Forces of Liberia.

The program was held Thursday at the Barclay Training Center Office of the Ministry of National Defense in Monrovia.

After administering the oath of allegiance, Deputy Minister Johnson hailed Collins for his success as he emerged as the only candidate out of over 150 Liberians who applied and participated for the scholarship.

“To decide on Collins was a difficult task especially so when the number was reduced from 152 to 16 and later 6 out of which he was chosen by the United States Government Departments of Defense and States as the most qualified candidate of his peers,” Johnson noted.

“What was even astonishing was for his colleagues to have acknowledged that indeed he was most qualified for the opportunity than them,” he added.

In his welcome remarks, AFL Chief of Staff Brigadier General Daniel Dee Ziankahn described the success of Collins as enviable, as attending the Military Academy of West Point does not only make one proud but also sets you apart from some of your professional colleagues.

“So for us as a newly branded military, to have one of our own going to attend West Point brings us pride and this is something that is enviable,” he noted.

He then warned Collins against vices that could undermine the confidence reposed in him and cautioned him to remain vigilant and obey all orders rightfully given.

Upon successful completion of his studies, Scott Amos Collins will become the third Liberian to join the ranks of Madison Tokpa and Fombah Sirleaf to be trained by the prestigious West Point Military Academy which teaches graduates to become leaders.
