Deputy MIA Boss Threatens To Fire ‘Ineffective’ Local Leaders

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, April 25 (LINA) - The Deputy Internal Affairs Minister for Urban Affairs, Stephen Neufville, has threatened to dismiss local authorities who fail to maintain proper sanitation and hygiene in cities across the country.

Neufville pointed out that the ministry will begin to inspect cities to ensure that effective clean-up campaigns are instituted in county capitals to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases.

He made the statement at the start of a three-day Solid Waste Management Learning Exchange for City Mayors and Development Superintendents held at the Monrovia City Hall Monday.

He indicated that accountability and transparency of logistics and equipment is essential to efficiently and effectively carry out proper sanitation and hygiene practices, and warned against the misdirection of equipment.

Neufville said government and its development partners are concerned about the setting up of urbanization mechanisms in the leeward counties, noting that local authorities have a significant role to play in the process.

The MIA official stressed that the setting up of urban cities cannot be like in the past, noting that social and economic growth are becoming major factors that concern the people.

The three-day seminar was organized by the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) in collaboration with Cities Alliance and USAID-Local Empowerment for Government Inclusion and Transparency (LEGIT) Project.
