PUL To Launch of National Media Council

MONROVIA, April 22 (LINA) - In an effort to strengthen media self-regulation and accountability for peace and security, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has announced the launch of the National Media Council and Revised Code of Ethics for Liberian journalists.

The National Media Council (NMC) is established to self-regulate media accountability and professional conduct in Liberia, pursuant to the journalism Code of Ethics.

The Council is the modified successor of the Media Complaints Committee of the PUL.

The membership of the Council is drawn from sectors of the society, which include three media representatives, two representatives from the religious community and one each from civil society and women groups, academia, and the Legislature.

The Council members were selected through a meticulous and competitive process, followed by orientations on the operational framework of the NMC and the Revised Code of Ethics for Liberian journalists.

The Revised Code and the Media Council were adopted at the 3rd Tri-Annual Congress of the PUL in Ganta, Nimba County on November 18, 2016.

Among other functions, the Council will undertake appropriate and proactive measures to ensure adherence to the highest journalistic standards, including investigation, mediation and settlement of complaints made against or by the press.

A PUL release recognized the support of USAID in strengthening media self-regulation in Liberia, which is part of a bigger media law reform being led by the Press Union with technical support from Internews.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the U.S. to Liberia are expected to make remarks at the event, which takes place at the Monrovia City Hall on Tuesday, April 25.

The release said the Union is excited that the launch of the National Media Council will stimulate additional public confidence and compliment on-going efforts to decriminalize press offenses in Liberia that is already in advance stages.
