FISH Manager Nudges Sanitation In Communities
By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, February 28 (LINA) - The Project Manager of the Fostering Innovative Sanitation and Hygiene (FISH) at the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) has challenged owners of Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs) to maintain proper sanitation in their communities.

Madam Yondeh Moore-Ileohukwu stated that the MCC initiated the CBE to ensure that various communities around Monrovia and its environs foster proper sanitation and hygiene.

Madam Ileohukweu proffered the challenge Tuesday at start of a two-day upgrading water and sanitation system incorporating skill-based training in the Ebola-affected community of Clara Town held at the Monrovia City Hall.

The MCC official maintained that the CBE has people in the various communities who collect dirt from door-to-door and take them to the designated sites in their communities.

She pointed out that other people have also been trained to manage public toilets in their communities to ensure that residents utilize the facilities rather than defecate around their communities.

Madam Ileohukwu stressed that open defecation is a serious challenge facing the City of Monrovia, noting that several homes do not have indoor toilet facilities.

The FISH Project Manager indicated that government has erected public toilet facilities to curtail the spread of open defecation and maintain proper sanitation and hygiene in Monrovia.

The seminar, which is sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Habitat for a better Urban Future, Global Ebola Response and International Labour Organization (ILO), brought together more than 100 participants from the Training of Community Management Team (CMT), CBEs and Performance Evaluation and Management Operations of public toilets.
