MOA Wants Partners Support Farming In Southeastern Liberia

MONROVIA, February 28 (LINA) - The Ministry of Agriculture is appealing to its partners to prioritize support to farming activities in the Southeast of Liberia to enhance lowland food production due to the huge structural potentials that are already in place.

The MOA in a press statement noted that Mr. Thomas Gbokie, Deputy Minister for Regional Development, Research and Extension, made the call Monday during a meeting held with a team from the United States Agency for International Development at the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the release, Minister Gbokie recounted some of the huge potential in the southeast as water harvesting infrastructure, post-harvest warehouse facilities, cold storage and access to the West Africa Power Pool.

He indicated that these huge potentials will improve the livelihood of Liberians living in the southeast, noting that Grand Kru County is better situated to engage in animal husbandry and fishery production.

Speaking earlier, Miss Jennifer Tikka, Team Leader of Economic Growth at USAID, disclosed that the team is in the country to acquaint itself with Liberia’s 2017 national strategy and plans for food and nutrition.

Also in remarks, Dr. Charles McClain, Deputy Minister for Planning and Development, pointed out that the Ministry is committed to transforming the agricultural sector from its current subsistent production level to mechanized production through its strategic plan in support of the Liberia Agricultural Transformation Agenda (LATA).

He disclosed that the ministry has established a database of farmers throughout the country with the type of crops being produced.

He pointed out that the Ministry has already engaged the services of some private agro dealer companies and input suppliers to ensure that inputs are delivered to locations within easy reach of farmers.
