UN Official Says Women Participation Key To Stability
By Calvin Brooks
MONROVIA, February 22 (LINA) - A representative of the United Nations Women in Liberia says increase in the participation of women and incorporation of gender perspectives in all activities are key to the stability of the country.
Fabric Laviolette stated that within the United Nations, the gender theme group is the main coordination mechanism that provides technical guidance to United Nations agencies and their mission.
Laviolette made the statement Wednesday at a program marking Global Open Day held at a local hotel in Monrovia.
Global Open Day on Women, Peace and Security in Kosovo is an opportunity to increase awareness of women's representation and participation in decision-making processes, to promote access to justice, and to help offer peace and security resolutions to empower women.
He maintained that gender equality is a non-negotiable agenda for the UN system in Liberia, so through the gender theme group, the UN Country Team provides a strategic response to ensure that the UN system’s commitment to gender equality is fully translated into policy, resource allocation and actions to address the drivers of inequalities and denial of women their full potential.
He explained that with the increase in the number of women registering for the 2017 elections and in women leadership positions, Liberia will attain gender equality in the not too distant future.
Laviolette emphasized that the global open day on women, peace and security, which was first observed in Liberia in 2010, is an opportunity for women of Liberia to bring forward their ideas, suggestions and recommendations that will transform Liberia and ensure that all live in a violence-free society.
