Pres. Sirleaf Dedicates 70 Housing Units in Brewerville

MONROVIA, February 15 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has dedicated 70 modern and affordable housing units, constituting Phase III of the NASSCORP Village Housing Estate in Brewerville City in Montserrado County.

“Take care of the property and maintain it in such a way that it continues to represent something that Liberia can be proud of. NASSCORP has done its work, NHA has it work, It’s now left with you. This is an example of what it takes to build our country,”   President Sirleaf indicated.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the Liberian leader was speaking at the dedicatory ceremony on Tuesday of the National Housing Authority-NASSCORP Village Housing Estate outside Monrovia.

She urged the Management of National Housing Authority (NHA) to construct more of such housing units, especially for low-income earners in other counties to alleviate the serious housing problem facing ordinary Liberians.

President Sirleaf commended the Chairperson of the Board of NASSCORP for the support and for being able to start and complete projects earmarked, adding: “We owe it to you all the workers of NHA and NASSCORP because of the role you have played,” President Sirleaf emphasized.

She also congratulated Mr. Dewitt Von Ballmoos, NASSCORP Director General, for his commitment to duty and said she looks forward to a Diagnostic Center where medical test will be done under NASSCORP’S auspices.

The Liberian leader cautioned potential owners of the housing units to be very careful of the arrangements they are entering into with the NHA regarding the units.

She said owners must read the document very well so there wouldn’t be any problem after affixing their signatures to a document.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Prince Wreh, acting NHA Managing Director, in a special statement, thanked the Liberian Chief Executive for the support to the NHA,  saying, “Thanks to you Madam President; This is a dream that has come to reality that Liberians can own their own homes now.”

Mr. Wreh stressed that the NHA’s goal is to make Liberians get their own home and praised President Sirleaf for giving young professionals the opportunity to serve their country responsibly but noted that there is still more work to be done.

For his part, Dewitt Von Ballmoons, Director General of NASSCORP, thanked President Sirleaf for her countless support to the corporation’s endeavors.

He said he has noticed with deep satisfaction the enormous work the President has done since her ascendency to the Presidency.

He said NASSCORP has spent $5.5mllion on the construction of housing units and said proceeds generated will be used to construct more units across the country.

Also making remarks, Bishop George D. Harris, NHA Chairman of the Board of Directors, said Phase IV, which will constitute 53 housing units, will come online in the not too distance future.

He pointed out Phase I - constituted 58 units, Phase II was 35 units and now Phase III constitutes 70 units, totaling 163 units constructed by NHA.

The affordable housing units, comprising three-bedrooms, two bathrooms, one living room, including front porches, is situated on a half lot of land.

The construction of 52 units was the First Phase, started in September 2014.

A unit, at a cost of US$20,000 will be paid for through a mortgage process subsidized by government at an interest rate of seven percent over a ten-year period.

The ceremony was graced by senior government officials, including Miatta Beyslow, Chairperson, Board of Directors of NASSCORP, George V. Curtis, Sr, the Mayor of the City of Brewerville, citizens, among others.
