Mt. Coffee Hydro Completion Major Achievement - Pres. Sirleaf
By Ballah M. Kollie
MONROVIA, January 24 (LINA) – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has described the commissioning of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant as a major achievement in power expansion fulfilled by her administration.
She said in furtherance of her fulfillment in the power sector, government has secured funding to complete the feasibility study for a reservoir on the Via River in Zorzor District, Lofa County.
It can be recalled that the Government of Liberia with support from development partners in December 2016 turned on the first of four turbines at the Mount Coffee Hydro power plant.
The plant is currently providing 22 megawatts of electricity to Monrovia and its environs.
In her final annual address to the nation Monday, President Sirleaf disclosed that construction of the reservoir on the Via River will ensure that the hydro plant has sufficient water to generate electricity throughout the year.
“Completion, on time, of regional projects that are underway will ensure that electricity is further expanded to communities all over the country and this would ensure a reduction in the cost of electricity, which will drop, next month, from forty-nine to thirty-nine cents per kilowatt hour,” the Liberia leader noted.
“I must caution that these cost reductions are unlikely to be sustained if we continue to face power theft,” she added.
She also disclosed that 318 persons have for the past 30 days been arrested in connection with power theft.
