MONROVIA, January 18 (LINA) - European Union (EU) Ambassador to Liberia, Tiina Intelmann, has lauded the progress made under the Liberia Decentralization Support Program, terming it as "encouraging."

Intelmann said the decentralization process in Liberia is well on track, with the County Service Centers coming on line and services being taken to the people, but noted that "a lot more needs to be done."

It can be recalled that in 2013, the EU approved Euros 5.5 million under its European Development Fund to assist the Liberian Government implement the national policy on decentralization and local governance.

Speaking on the ELBC “Super Morning Show” on Wednesday, Intelmann noted
that the EU decided to support the decentralization program because it is part of the Government’s policy to enhance interaction with the people.

She said the program is also intended to enable and provide easy access to services, thereby making operations of government easy and pleasant to the people.

Intelmann reiterated that the EU is here to help the government and the people of Liberia develop the nation.

She said though there are lots of challenges, the major achievement of the decentralization program is the service centers, with four completed and in use, while additional four are awaiting dedication.

The EU Ambassador said the project will end in 2018, and hoped that the government can continue the process.
