- A commentary by the Liberia News Agency (LINA) Why, Jammeh, Why?
MONROVIA, January 18 (LINA) - Outgoing Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Sunday, January 15, called the Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, to appeal to her to prevail on her colleagues to select judges to mediate in the current situation in the Gambia.
After listening to her Gambian counterpart attentively, President Sirleaf requested him to reduce his request into writing so that she could present his case to ECOWAS.
Surprisingly, what she thought was a private conversation between two heads of state was illegally tape-recorded by Mr. Jammeh and aired live on Gambia national television.
The Liberia News Agency (LINA), like any other responsible media outlet in the world, is totally surprised by the irresponsible behavior of Jammeh who was recently flogged in a free, democratic and transparent presidential election in The Gambia.
Instead of engaging in extra-judicial and illegal activities, LINA believes it will benefit Jammeh personally, the Gambian people and the international community were he to do the honorable thing by respecting the will of his people and packing his personal belongings and exiting the Gambian Presidential Palace at the time set by the Constitution.
Good bye, Mr. Yahya Jammeh! The Gambian people have spoken; ECOWAS and the international community stand by them, and you have no other choice but to pack up and leave.
