Confucius Institute Boosts Sino-Liberia Ties - Chinese Diplomat
By Robert Dixon

MONROVIA, January 16 (LINA) - The Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy near Monrovia has said the Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Liberia has made significant contributions to the bilateral and cultural exchanges between Liberia and China.

Li Zhuang made the statement in his keynote address at the eighth anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute over the weekend on the main campus of the University of Liberia.

Li pointed out that the institute overcame difficulties and made contributions with the continuous efforts of the teachers, volunteers, and consistent support from both  the Chinese and Liberian Governments.

According to the Chinese envoy, the Confucius Institute has over the years grown into one of the most famous foreign language and cultural exchange institutions in Liberia by building friendship and mutual understanding between Liberia and China.

“The Confucius Institute set up Chinese language courses for officers of the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization (BIN) and officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) to make their communication in the Chinese language easier,” he said.

He described the celebration as a year of struggle and striving for progress, noting that over the past eight years the Confucius Institute has made much headway step-by-step with its graduates being all over the country.

Mr. Li indicated that the Confucius Institute has been teaching the Chinese culture not only in classes at the University of Liberia but also to journalists all around Liberia.

Earlier, Mr. Dehpue Zuo, Liberia’s Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration and Gbovodeh Gbilia, Deputy Education Minister for Planning, praised the Chinese Government for its assistance to Liberia, and encouraged Liberians to take advantage of the of the opportunity to learn the Chinese language.
