ECOWAS Stresses Women’s Rights - Ajisomo
By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, January 16 (LINA) - The Special Representative of the ECOWAS President in Liberia has disclosed that the maiden celebration of ECOWAS Human Rights Day places emphasis on the promotion and protection of women’s rights in Liberia.

Ambassador Babatunde Ajisomo stated that Liberians should engage the government in a constructive manner as the primary duty bearers as well as other relevant actors who are involved with the promotion and protection of human rights to address the challenges facing women and young girls in Liberia and the sub-region at large.

Ambassador Ajisomo made the assertion Monday at a program marking the maiden celebration of the ECOWAS Human Rights Day held at the Monrovia
City Hall.

He stressed that it is time to move from the ECOWAS of member states to the ECOWAS of the people which is to ensure that the rights of women, children and those that are marginalized are protected at all times.

According to Ajisomo, there is need for governments and the private sector to step up their commitment to empower women and that policies intended to promote men alone to occupy certain positions should be strongly discouraged.

Ambassador Ajisomo explained that the ECOWAS Human Rights Day was adopted December 17, 2016 at the 50th Ordinary Summit in Abuja, Nigeria by the Heads of States under the Chairmanship of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to declare January 16 every year as ECOWAS Human Rights Day.
