INCHR Chair Lauds ECOWAS Leaders Over Rights Day
By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, January 16 (LINA) - The acting Chairman of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights of Liberia has disclosed that human rights organizations in the sub-region and the world have lauded ECOWAS leaders for setting January 16 aside as ECOWAS Human Rights Day.

Acting Chairman Bartholomew B. Colley stated that the January 16 declaration is not only commendable and historic, but also a declaration of warfare to ensure that human rights organizations keep subsequent governments’ feet close to the fire to ensure the promotion and sustenance of good governance which includes best practice of international human rights standard.

The INCHR boss made the remarks Monday at a program marking the maiden celebration of the ECOWAS Human Rights Day held at the Monrovia City
Hall.

He indicated that human rights organizations also commended all those who fought and died and those who continue to fight for human rights and democracy like President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

He, however, reminded ECOWAS leaders that mere declaration without practical steps is not enough to ensure that issues relating to human rights in the sub-region are adequately addressed.

Chairman Colley stressed that ECOWAS leaders should ratify and domesticate best international human rights practices, including child rights, women and girl’s protection and natural resource governance.
