By Prince S. Nagbe
MONROVIA, January 14 (LINA) – A Representative aspirant of Konobo Electoral District #2 in Grand Gedeh County, Willie M. Dweh, has lauded President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for granting clemency to four Grand Gedeans convicted of mercenary activities in neighboring La Cote d’Ivoire.
Speaking to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in Monrovia on Friday, Mr. Dweh said the decision by President Sirleaf to release the convicted men speaks volumes about her quest for reconciliation and unity in the country.
He noted that the action by the Liberian leader to grant Executive Clemency to more than 13 convicted Liberians was in the right direction and should be welcomed by all Liberians, including Grand Gedeans, especially as the country draws closer to the 2017 Presidential and Legislative elections.
Meanwhile, the Grand Gedeh Electoral District #2 aspirant is calling on those released by the President to strive to be good and law-abiding citizens by helping their communities promote peace and the prevention of crimes.
He also called on them to exhibit positive attitudes and to also serve as ambassadors of change in their respective communities for development across the county in particular and the country in general.
It can be recalled that President on Friday, December 30, 2016 granted
Executive Clemency to 13 convicted prisoners from three prison facilities across Liberia of which four were Grand Gedeans.
The four Grand Gedeans, who benefited from the Liberian leader’s goodwill are Messrs Ophoree Diah, Emmanuel Saymah, Jacob Saydee and Moses Bayee.
They were amongst 11 of their kinsmen who invaded neighboring Cote d’Ivoire a couple of years ago and were charged for Mercenarism and found guilty of the crime.
In a related development, the Grand Gedeh District #2 aspirant has commended Vice President Joseph Boakai for always attending to the calls of the people of Grand Gedeh, the recent being the graduation ceremony of the Grand Gedeh Community College where he served as keynote speaker.
Dweh also thanked VP Boakai for the role he played in ensuring that President Sirleaf granted Executive Clemency to the four Grand Gedeans.
