450 More Homes Get LEC Expansion Services

By Chiedi E. Nyenmoh

MONROVIA, January 12 (LINA) – The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) under its expansion project recently connected 450 additional homes in Montserrado County.

This number, according to LEC Communications Specialist James Kpargoi, is part of a total of 2,500 homes that are targeted for connection as a result of the commissioning of the Mt. Coffee Hydropower Plant in White Plains, outside Monrovia.

Speaking on the UNMIL Radio “Coffee Break” Wednesday, the LEC official said 250 residents in Gardnersville near the Double Bridge and an additional 200 residents in the Raymond Town community close to the hydro plant are currently benefiting from the expansion service.

He said apart from the household electricity service, residents of Raymond Town community are benefiting from street lights that were installed under the expansion project.

According to him, the LEC will ensure that Liberians get access to electricity services with the hydro power plant now in full swing.

It can be recalled that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf dedicated the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant in Harrisburg, Montserrado County on December 15, 2016.

The hydro power plant, which was re-constructed by the Liberian Government with the support of friendly governments and institutions, currently has a capacity of 22 megawatts.

It is expected to provide sustainable electricity to an initial 40,000 households in Montserrado County and rural areas.

Kpargoi said this is the first time residents of Johnsonville Township are benefiting from electricity provided by LEC since the civil war, adding that the intent of the expansion is to ensure that the people gain access to services they deserve.
