Legislature To Propose Funding For PUL Headquarters
By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, January 10 (LINA) - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emmanuel Nuquay, has disclosed that the Legislature is proposing the inclusion of the Liberian media in the National Budget beginning the 2017/2018 fiscal year to help with construct the headquarters of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL).

Nuquay said the budgetary assistance to the PUL, which is also intended to provide training and capacity-building for members of the Fourth Estate, will be implemented under the direction and supervision of the relevant agency of government.

Speaking at the opening of the 6th and final session of the 53rd Legislature at the Capitol Building on Monday, Nuquay said this move is intended to enhance media partnership and the vision of the legislature and the transformation agenda of Liberia.

"The media can promote and damage the image of the country and scare away investors. This is why we are engaging the media in a partnership so that all of us can work together in moving our country forward," Nuquay said.

He said the partnership with the Liberian media has two dimensions with the first being the provision of assistance to the media for the purpose of organizing a responsible press which will promote peace and reconciliation among the citizens.

The second is, the Speaker said, allow the media to constructively critique the branches of government to enable the government discover its flaws and shortcomings so that it can take the necessary actions to correct its mistakes.

"The partnership should and must be based on mutual understanding and respect. We are asking the media to do their duty with patriotism to ensure the country remains peaceful," Nuquay noted.

He is of the opinion that these measures will give birth to a responsible media that will help maintain the nation's peace, improve the image of Liberia as well as attract investors to the country.
