NEC Opens Nominations For Lofa By-Election

MONROVIA January 4 (LINA) - The National Elections Commission (NEC) has opened nominations for the Lofa County District#1 by-election.

The NEC disclosed in a statement that candidate nominations began on January 3 and will remain open until January 13 at the headquarters of the commission in the Monrovia suburb o f Sinkor.

The NEC said the candidate nomination period is in keeping with its key electoral dates released for the conduct of the by-election in Lofa County District #1 which was occasioned by the death of Representative Eugene Fallah Kpakar.

The NEC says only chairmen or secretary generals of political parties will be allowed to collect nomination packages from the Nomination Center at the NEC headquarters.

Meanwhile, the NEC has set February 28 as the date for the conduct of the Lofa County District #1by-election.

This is in keeping with Article 37 of the Liberian Constitution which states: “that in the event of a vacancy in the Legislature caused by death, resignation, expulsion, or otherwise, the presiding officer shall within 30 days notify the elections commission thereof.”

It also states that the Elections Commission shall not later than 90 days thereafter cause a by-election to be held; provided that where such vacancy occurs within 90 days prior to the holding of general elections, the filling of the vacancy shall await the holding of such general election.

It can be recalled that the House of Representatives on November 10, 2016 adjourned the Second Day Sitting of its Extraordinary Session as a result of the death of the Lofa lawmaker in India where he had gone to seek medical attention.

Kparkar's death brings to two the number of Lofa lawmakers who have died in the 53rd Legislature.

It can be recalled that Lofa County District #2 Representative, Fofi Sahr Baimba, died on September 13, 2015 at the JFK Memorial Hospital in Monrovia following brief illness.
