Swedish Envoy Nordström Ends Tour of Duty

By Ballah M. Kollie

MONROVIA, January 4 (LINA) – Swedish Ambassador Lena Nordström has ended her tour of duty in Liberia and will depart the country on Tuesday, January 10.

Making the disclosure on the Wednesday, January 4, edition of the program “Decentralization Forum” aired on the state-run ELBC Radio, Madam Nordstrom regretted that she was leaving Liberia at a time when lots of interesting and positive things are happening in the country.

“I feel that I am not leaving at the right time. I am leaving at the wrong time, especially when lots of important, interesting and positive things are happening but these things happen in the diplomatic quarter,” she noted.

She outlined her government’s support to the Liberia's decentralization program, road rehabilitation and the involvement of two Swedish companies in the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant that is now transmitting 22 megawatts of power to Monrovia and its environs.

The Swedish envoy, who has been in the country since 2015, was instrumental in the implementation of several development programs in the country.

She presented her letters of credence to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Monday, October 19, 2015.

On December 9 of the same year, she signed a US$5 million contribution agreement to assist the Government of Liberia with the implementation of its decentralization program.

She praised the implementation of the decentralization program which, she said, is making the anticipated impact in the lives of citizens.

The Swedish government was helpful in strengthening the decentralization program of government which aims to institute reforms, ensure peace-building and reconciliation as well as foster the reduction of poverty in the country.

She disclosed that her country’s support to Liberia’s decentralization program is due to the importance Sweden attaches to decentralization as it is also practicing this program that is controlled by local leaders.

She said for peace to be maintained in the country, decentralizing government is a cardinal tool that must be enhanced.
