China Dedicates Jorkpen Town Market Pilot Projects

By Prince Nagbe

MONROVIA, March 22 (LINA) -The Chinese Embassy in Monrovia has presented to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf a number of pilot projects it undertook at the Jorkpen Town Market in the Liberian capital.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yue presented 18 sets of solar energy street lamps installed by New Energy Industry Company Liberia Inc., a borehole well built by Zhongmei Engineering Group Ltd, a school and office materials such as chairs and desks that were donated by LC Opportunity Nature Resources Company.

Presenting the project on behalf of the Chinese Government, Chinese Ambassador Zhang said the market pilot project is geared towards empowering the Jorkpen Town market women and the Rally Time School, under the framework the “China-Africa People-to-People Friendship Action.”

The Chinese envoy said the companies have committed themselves to a one-year warranty on each of the projects and promised to train five to seven Liberian technicians to maintain the solar energy lamps.

Ambassador Zhang pledged China’s continued development assistance to implement feasible grassroots programs in Liberia, working in coordination with local NGOs, including the Sirleaf Market Women Fund.

In response, President Sirleaf thanked the government and people of China for the gesture, adding that the projects will benefit market women and their children both at the Jorkpen Town market and the Rally Time school.

President Sirleaf said she was especially pleased because the project is directly going to benefit women and youth who are the two most vulnerable groups in the country.

The Liberian leader then called on the Chinese Ambassador to renovate the playground for students of the Rally Time School, so that they can recreate after hard studies.

The Chinese Government has undertaken many landmark projects in Liberia, such as the Tappita Referral Hospital in Nimba County, the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia, SKD Sports Complex and the Ministry of Health Complex, among others.
