Gender Minister Nudges Liberian Women To Contest 2017 Polls
By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, December 8 (LINA) - Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Julia Duncan Cassel is urging Liberian women to join political parties to contest the 2017 Presidential and Legislative Elections.

Minister Cassel stated that it will not be wise for female candidates to contest as independent candidates, noting that contesting on political party tickets will boost their chances of winning the elections.

The Gender minister made the assertion Tuesday at a three-day Liberian Women’s Manifesto Framework Conference held at a local hotel in Monrovia.

She noted that Liberian women always support the males in political party activities to win legislative elections, but are not recognized for key positions in these parties.

She observed that none of the 22 political parties accredited by the National Elections Commission (NEC) has a female as national chairperson or standard bearer.

Minister Cassel called on the NEC to ensure that political parties abide by the election law which calls for 30 percent women representation in political party positions in Liberia.
