ECOWAS Trade Task Force On Need For Common Market

MONROVIA, December 8 (LINA) - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Task Force on Trade Liberalization Scheme has given President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf updates on the team’s assessment mission.

The mission focused on reinforcing economic integration in West Africa as well as the need for a common market.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf welcomed the delegation to Liberia and thanked them for the updates provided on their assessment visit.

She said Trade Liberalization in the ECOWAS sub-region is the necessary first step towards economic integration.

She praised the delegation for the assessment conducted and as well providing the necessary updates, indicating that the assessment by the Task Force is appreciated by the government and people of Liberia.

Speaking earlier, the Head of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Assessment Team, Mr. Salou Djibo, commended the Government of Liberia for the ratification of ECOWAS Protocols, noting that this was unprecedented.

He stressed the necessity to reinforce economic integration processes in West Africa, particularly within the context of a common market consolidation and by adhering to ETLS regime.

He said the applications of ECOWAS principles and protocols and the pursuit of efforts to close the barrier on tariffs are some of the key reasons his delegation was in Liberia to carry out the assessment.

Mr. Salou Djibo was accompanied to the office of President Sirleaf by ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia Abdou Sourang, with senior government officials in attendance.
