ECOWAS Humanitarian Mission Arrives December 7

MONROVIA, December 6 (LINA) - The ECOWAS Commissioner for Social Affairs and Gender, Dr. Fatimata Dia Sow, will arrive in Liberia Wednesday, December 7, on a one-day working visit.

Dr. Dia Sow, who will make an official delivery of ECOWAS Humanitarian Assistance, will meet with the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Julia Duncan Cassell at the Ministry’s Capitol Bye-Pass office.

The ECOWAS Commissioner will make an official delivery of an ECOWAS Humanitarian Assistance for vulnerable people and orphans affected by the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

According to a dispatch, a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives to the EVD is expected to be observed during the presentation.

Minister Cassell, who also chairs ECOWAS’ Gender activities, is expected to also discuss with Commissioner Sow regional gender issues.

The ECOWAS President Special Representative in Liberia, Ambassador Babatunde O. Ajisomo, will also make remarks during the program which will be climaxed with a press briefing.

It can be recalled that an ECOWAS Humanitarian team visited Liberia during the Ebola scourge and assessed the situation and recommended appropriate actions to ECOWAS.

Since then, the ECOWAS Commission has initiated actions for implementing the recommendations, including the approval of a US$70,000 to help vulnerable persons and orphans affected by the Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia.

The amount is to assist in acquiring food and non-food items urgently needed.
