Storm Renders Over 300 Homeless In Tapitta
By S. Kannay Ziamo, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

GANTA, November 10 (LINA) - Over 300 residents of Tapitta, lower Nimba County, have been made homeless by a heavy storm that hit the town recently.

Making the disclosure via mobile phone from Tapitta, Doe Administrative District Commissioner, Mr. Sam Wehyee, said the storm damaged 150 public and private buildings in the town that is considered one of Nimba County’s most populated.

He said some of the storm victims are currently seeking shelter in the homes of relatives and community dwellers, while others are sheltering in public buildings in the town.

The Doe Administrative Commissioner said the situation is worrisome, because some of the storm victims who are sheltering in open buildings could come down with illnesses as a result of the cold weather.

Wehyee said this is not the first storm to wreck havoc in the town, but pointed out that the latest storm caused more damage than previous ones.

He attributed the storm disasters in the area to the continuous felling of trees by citizens to produce charcoal and for other purposes.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Wehyee is calling on the Liberia National Red Cross Society and partners to come to the aid of the storm victims as soon as possible, adding that “their condition, especially during this rainy season, is not safe.”
