Teachers Crave For Banks in Lofa Districts

VOINJAMA, March 20 (LINA) -Teachers assigned in Lofa County are calling for the establishment of local banks in the seven districts of the county, to facilitate the encashment of their salary checks.

One of the teachers, J. Mulbah Zayzay, told the Liberia News Agency that because teachers have to travel to Voinjama, the provincial capital, to encash their salary checks, teachers outside of the Voinjama always abandon classes for nearly a week to go after their salaries.

Several teachers assigned in Lofa County, who had converged at the Voinjama Administration Building Wednesday, expressed frustration over this situation which, they said, usually leaves many of them stranded.

Instructor Zayzay said teachers travel long distances from Salayea, Zorzor, Quardu Gboni, Kolahun, Foya and Vahun distracts to Voinjama for their salaries, noting that some of the teachers spend over L$2,000 on transportation, lodging and feeding.

He added that the situation was also posing economic hardships for them and their families.

Several of the teachers told LINA that the situation was also causing a serious setback to the education of students in the county.

They said, establishment of local banks in every district of the county will help reduce the economic burden not only for them, but other government employees as well.
