VP Boakai Raps On Liberia's Health Delivery Gains

MONROVIA, November 2 (LINA) - Vice President Joseph Boakai has observed that Liberia has made significant gains in healthcare delivery since 2008, ranging from reduction in child mortality, maternal deaths and an increase in life expectancy.

He said the gains made in increasing life expectancy means that a child born today in Liberia would on an average live for over 61.4 years, adding, "The review of the nation's life expectancy is intended to reflect the country's health and the level of quality care received by people when sick."

A release issued here Monday said the Vice President made the statement at the 40th Annual General Scientific Meeting of the West Africa College of Physicians, held at a local hotel in Paynesville outside Monrovia.

The release said the 40th Annual General Scientific Meeting is being held under the theme: "Building a Resilient Health System in West Africa: Social, Economic and Political Implications."

Boakai told the gathering that the nation was on the trajectory of these gains which was then interrupted by the outbreak of the Ebola virus in 2014.

The release quotes VP Boakai as saying that “Liberia, being an integral part of West Africa, should stand in optimistic anticipation for the successful outcome of the conference.”

He said as a national response, Liberia developed the investment plan for building a resilient health system from 2015 to 2021.
