Senator Wants Gender Sensitive Political Parties
By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, October 25 (LINA) - Bong County Senator Jewel Howard Taylor is urging Liberian political parties to be gender sensitive in the composition of their leadership structures.

According to Senator Taylor, political parties should create space for female partisans to occupy strategic positions or contest on their party’s ticket in the 2017 elections.

The Bong County lawmaker, who is also Chairperson of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), made the call Monday at a program marking the National Peace Festival held under the theme: ‘Kukatonnon,’ which means in a local dialect, ‘We Are One,’ held at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia.

She stressed that the National Elections Commission (NEC) and political parties should consider the issue of gender equity in the 2017 General and Presidential Elections to ensure adequate women participation.

She noted that over the years, male partisans more often hold key positions in political parties or contest on their party’s tickets compared to their female counterparts.

Meanwhile, Senator Taylor has assured that the NPP remains committed to peaceful General and Presidential Elections in 2017, and hoped that other political parties, including the ruling party, will ensure peaceful elections.
