1st Phase Of Reservoir Filing Completed At Mt. Coffee

MONROVIA, October 24 (LINA) – Phase One of the reservoir impoundment at the Mt. Coffee Hydropower Project to pave the way for the commissioning of a 22 megawatt turbine in December has been completed.

According to a statement issued here, the team at the project site in Harrisburg successfully completed the reservoir impoundment on October 19.

An impoundment facility in hydropower generation is a large hydropower system which uses a dam to store river water in a reservoir.

Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity.

The statement quotes Bill Hakin, Director of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), as saying that the completion is a major milestone as it is a pre-condition for the commissioning of the first turbine.

Hakin said on October 15, the spillway gates were gradually closed in order to increase the water level in the reservoir.

He noted that on October 19, the water level reached 28 meters above sea level, which is one meter below the maximum operating level.

Hakin said this is an important achievement in the project because at such water level the team will now begin testing the first turbine unit, something which, he said, could not have been possible without great team work and a lot of dedication.

He said despite the enormous challenges, the project remains on track with the hope of allowing the hydropower facility to deliver electricity to the LEC grid by mid-December this year.
