VP Boakai Mends Fence Among Feuding USA-UP Groups

MONROVIA, October 19 (LINA) - Partisans of the Unity Party-USA divided for several years into two factions have resolved their differences and decided to come together.

At a meeting in Washington DC, moderated by UP Standard Bearer and Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, members of the Party in the Diaspora decided to put an end to the long-running division between them.

The partisans also agreed that it was paramount that the party speaks with one voice, focusing fully on the election of VP Boakai as Liberia's next President.

By a consensus vote, the partisans selected an interim leadership with Dr. Anthony Kanneh, as National Chairman, Mr. Erasmus Williams as National Vice Chairman and Mr. Musa Keita as National Secretary-General.

The Interim leadership will complete the process leading to the UP-USA election of a new corps of officers and the restructuring of the party machinery, according to a dispatch from Washington D.C.

Vice President Boakai challenged the new leadership to focus on its terms of reference and work sacrificially in the interest of Liberia.

He said the Unity Party must continue to demonstrate leadership in addressing the myriad of problems facing the country.

The Standard Bearer extended special commendation to partisan Erasmus Williams for being a key supporter of the peace process and for demonstrating deep love and commitment to the Unity Party.

Also speaking during the meeting, the former National Chairman Gayah Fahnbulleh welcomed the peace process and emphasized the need to bring all partisans and friends of the party under one umbrella.

He stressed that the goals and objectives of the Unity Party far superseded any personal agenda.

The Interim National Chairman, Dr. Anthony Kanneh, thanked Standard Bearer Boakai for bringing the party back together and expressed gratitude to the partisans for the confidence reposed in him, promising to work assiduously to rebuild the party in the USA, said the dispatch.
