Liberia Youth Olympic Delegation Off To China

MONROVIA, October 13 (LINA) - The Chinese Embassy near Monrovia has confirmed that the Liberia Youth Olympic Delegation has departed the country to participate in the Nanjing International Youth Sports and Cultural Week in China.

A release from the embassy on Thursday said the Youth Olympic delegation left  the country on October 8 at the invitation of the Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Sports  to participate in the event.

The release said the Liberian delegation voluntarily declined to participate in the event in 2014 due to the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic which claimed the lives of thousands of people in the West African sub-region.

It says as a result of the delegation's kind gesture, the Chinese organizer resolved to invite the team to visit China after the epidemic ended.

The release quotes Boie Corvah, head of the delegation and Senior Official of the National Olympic Committee of Liberia, as saying that the team will utilize the opportunity to learn more about sports training and practice from their Chinese counterparts.

He said the opportunity will also be utilized for to promote and develop sports as well as deepen the mutual understanding between the two nations.

The release noted that the exchange visit of the delegation is not only an important part of sports and cultural exchange, but also the fulfillment of dreams of the delegates to take part in youth Olympic games.
