Supreme Court Complies With FOI Law

MONROVIA, October 12 (LINA) - The Supreme Court of Liberia has complied with the Freedom of Information (FOI) law by uploading its website on Monday, October 10, the Independent Information Commission (IIC) has said.

IIC Commissioner Cllr. Bedor-Wla Freeman said setting up a website is in compliance with the FOI Act because it proactively affords interested individuals access to information about the Supreme Court’s operations and activities.

“This is in compliance with the FOI Law which enhances our democratic governance process and must be hailed,” Freeman noted in a release issued Monday.

He is accordingly urging all government and private institutions to create websites which in a proactive way provide information to the public about operations and activities of their institutions, adding that “failure to do so indicates that one is operating in the dark or clandestinely."

The Freedom of Information Act passed in 2010 compels public bodies and private institutions performing public functions or receiving public funding to provide information requested by members of the public.
