China Gives US$2m Supplies To Police
MONROVIA, October 5 (LINA) – The Government of China has agreed to provide US$2 million to the Government of Liberia for the supply of equipment to the Liberia National Police (LNP).
Acting Foreign Minister Elais Shoniyin and Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Zhang Yue, on Tuesday signed the exchange notes for the provision of the fund for the batch of China Aided Police Supplies by the Government of China to the Government of Liberia.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, the money is going to come in services and goods, including training and pieces of vital law enforcement equipment.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador Zhang said the donation will enhance the effectiveness of the LNP as well as boost the nation’s security sector, especially at a time when the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has turned over security to the Liberian Government.
Meanwhile, the Chinese envoy has disclosed that coupled with the supplies there will be more capacity building for the LNP and other law enforcement actors, stressing that “security is the most fundamental part of every nation’s peace and stability.”
In remarks, acting Foreign Minister Shoniyin thanked Ambassador Zhang and the Chinese Government for the gesture and noted that the Asian country has always been “a very great partner” in Liberia’s post-war economic development agenda.
“The provision of the batch of supplies is a clear manifestation that China was not only standing with Liberia during peacekeeping, but it is still with Liberia even after UNMIL draws down.
He observed that the donation is China’s largest in Liberia’s security sector, and it comes at a time when Liberia is about to go to elections for the smooth transfer of power.
According to him, Liberians look forward to the 2017 elections and anticipate that it will be conducted in ways that reflect the stability of the state.
Also in remarks at the ceremony, Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman lauded China for the supplies and noted that it has proven to be a dependable and strong partner to Liberia.
He assured Ambassador Zhang that the supplies will be accounted for and used for the intended purpose.
Coleman thanked the Chinese government for helping to strengthen Liberia’s peace and security sectors.
