House Elects Nuquay As Speaker

By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, October 5 (LINA) - Margibi County District #5 Representative Emmanuel J. Nuquoi, has been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Garnering 50 votes from his colleagues on a white ballot, Nuquay’s elections is expected to bring to an end a long-running leadership quagmire which has plagued the body for over three months.

The election of Nuquay on Wednesday, followed rulings in which the Supreme Court of Liberia declined to issue two writs of prohibition against the electoral process and the change of leadership at the House.

The election was held in the absence of Deputy House Speaker and Presiding Officer Hans Barchue, who on Tuesday adjoined the 5th session of the body on grounds that he did not endorse the agenda which was being used to hold the session.

Having taken the oath of office which was conducted by the Chief Clerk of the House, Nuquay, with hands on the gavel, affirmed his commitment to steering the affairs of the House in a manner that will bring restoration to the image of the body.

He thinks that the leadership crisis which has plagued the body must now be put aside with the hope of working towards achieving Liberia's development agenda.

Nuquay said that the body is confronted with a challenge to ensuring that unity prevails among its members to serve as a prerequisite to doing the job of the Liberian people.

"As a team leader, I will work with you to ensure that we build a leadership team that will achieve the development agendas of Liberia and the restoration of the image of the House of Representatives," he said.

Nuquay has also vowed to work with his colleagues to ensure a massive transition of members from the 53rd to the 54th National Legislature.

"The forth-coming 2017 general and presidential elections pose a looming challenge to members of the House," Nuquay added.

Nuquay also vowed to ensure that proper coordination between the Legislature and the Executive be established for the good of the government and the people of Liberia.
