House To Elect New Speaker Tuesday

By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, October 3 (LINA) – Members of the House of Representatives are Tuesday expected to go to the polls to elect a Speaker.

The election comes against the backdrop of the recent removal of House Speaker Alex Tyler by a resolution signed by 49 of the 73 members of the House, declaring a vote of no confidence in Tyler's leadership.

According to reports, Tyler, who arrived in the country from a medical leave recently, is expected to ask the Supreme Court to place an injunction on the electoral process at the House.

Nominations for the Speaker post, according to the electoral guidelines released Friday by the office of the Chief Clerk, will be done in plenary on Tuesday, but already it is being speculated that several representatives are eying the seat.

The Liberia News Agency has gathered that Deputy House Speaker Hans Barchue and Margibi County Representative Emmanuel Nuquay are currently the only two lawmakers who have openly declared their intention to contest for the post.

It is also being speculated that Nimba County Representative Richard M. Tingban, Montserrado County Representative Josephine Francis and Representative Clarence Massaquoi of Lofa County are also expected to throw their hats into the race.
