Journalists, Health Workers Train In Health Reporting Skills
By S. Kannay Ziamo, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

GANTA, September 29 (LINA) – Journalists and healthcare workers in Ganta, Nimba County have undergone training in reporting on health-related issues and the method of providing information to journalists when the need arises.

Participants from Lofa, Bong, Grand Gedeh and Nimba counties attended the training which was held under the auspices of the Health Promotion Professional Association (HPPA) in Ganta with funding from U.S. Agency for International Development.

In remarks, the National Coordinator of HPPA, Victor Seah, said the training is also intended to further enhance the cordial ties between the media and health actors through the formation of a health platform for the flow of information.

According to Seah, the organization has observed that journalists are not doing much in reporting on health issues due to the bureaucracy involved in gathering news from the health sector.

He indicated that bringing the two groups together at the workshop “will further explain and distinguish the roles of both groups in their dealings.”

“Bringing the two groups together and explaining how important each group is to the other is one of the best ways to improve the quality of reporting on health issues, thereby restoring the people's trust in the nation's health sector,” he added.

Meanwhile, a group, the Nimba Health Reporters Association (NHRA) was formed at the end of the one-day training.

The objective of the NHRA is to organize regular health reporters’ meetings to discuss ways to further cement relations between health workers and journalists for informed reporting on the health sector.

It will be headed by a health worker and assisted by two co-chairs from media institutions.
