Equal Access Key To FOI Implementation - Swedish Envoy
By Stephen N. Sonpon
MONROVIA, September 28 (LINA) – Sweden’s Ambassador to Liberia, Lena Nordstrom, has said Freedom of Information (FOI) can only be achieved if women and men are given equal access to information.
According to Nordstrom, in the implementation of the FOI, all groups, regardless of age, gender, location, ability, region, religion, and ethnicity, must have equal access in the promotion and protection of the right to access information.
Nordstrom made the statement Wednesday at the occasion marking the 6th Annual celebration of International Right to Know Day held at the Ministry of Information conference Hall on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.
She said access to FOI rights is important in promoting inclusive, accountable, open and transparent democratic governance.
The Swedish envoy noted that access to information is the core issue of transparency, democracy and a precondition for bringing any government closer to its people.
On July 22, 2010, the Freedom of Information Bill was enacted into law. It gives members of the press and the general public unfettered access to public records.
