Rep. Snowe Proposes Act For Islamic Holiday
By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, September 21 (LINA) - An Act seeking to establish "Eid al-Adha" (Abraham's Day) as a national holiday in Liberia has been submitted to the House of Representatives by Montserrado County District #6 Representative Edwin Snowe.

When passed into law, Eid al-Adha, which is globally observed by Muslims, will be celebrated as a national holiday, thereby granting Muslims in the country the leverage for the first time to commemorate a holiday which is supported by legislation.

Abraham Day, as it is popularly called, is observed by Muslims around the world in commemoration of the day the prophet Abraham expressed his willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of submission to God.

The day is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year and considered the holier of the two.

Snowe in a communication accompanying the draft Act addressed to Presiding Officer Hans Barchue on Tuesday said this demonstration of faith by Abraham is appreciated by both Christians and Muslims.

Snowe said it is befitting in conformity with respect for religious freedom to grant Muslims as well as those of the Christian faith the chance to adequately celebrate Eid al-Adha as a national holiday.

The House has, meanwhile, forwarded the Act to its relevant committee which is expected to report to the body in one week.

It can be recalled that Nimba County Senator Prince Johnson recently submitted a Bill at the Liberian Senate seeking to grant Muslims two National Holidays.
