UN Head Wants “Those With Influence” To End Syria Fighting

MONROVIA, September 21 (LINA) – The U.N. Secretary-General has appealed to all persons of influence to get talks started to end the years of fighting in Syria so that the violence, misrule and future of that country will not rest on the fate of a single man.

Ban Ki-moon said in his final address to the UN General Assembly in New York Tuesday that a political transition is long overdue.

He indicated that the conflict in Syria is taking the greatest number of lives and sowing the widest instability with no military solution.

Many groups have killed many innocents, but none more so than the Government of Syria which continues to barrel-bomb neighborhoods and systematically torture thousands of detainees, the UN boss pointed out.

According to Ban powerful patrons that keep fueling the war machine also have blood on their hands.

He added: “Present in this hall today are representatives of governments that have ignored, facilitated, funded, participated in or even planned and carried out atrocities inflicted by all sides of the Syria conflict against Syrian civilians.”

“Just when we think it cannot get any worse, the bar of depravity sinks lowers,” he said, pointing out Tuesday’s “sickening, savage, and apparently deliberate attack” on an UN-Syrian Arab Red Crescent aid convoy as the latest example.

Ban stated that the United Nations has been forced to suspend aid convoys as a result of this outrage, adding that “the humanitarians delivering life-saving aid were heroes and those who bombed them were cowards.”

He indicated that accountability for crimes such as these is essential.
