Whistleblower, Witness Protection To Top Regional Anti-Graft Meet

MONROVIA, September 17 (LINA) - The twin issues of whistleblower and witness protection in the fight against corruption will top discussions at a regional workshop planned for Monrovia next week.

The three-day regional workshop will bring together more than 60 anti-corruption practitioners and government officials from West Africa.

The workshop will also be attended by police chiefs, lawmakers with oversight on corruption issues and representatives from organizations involved with whistleblower and witness protection in West Africa.

It comes against the backdrop that despite increased awareness about the need to enact whistleblower and witness protection legislation and other measures, there is still a lack of technical knowledge on how to devise such legislation.

A release issued here said most countries have some form of general witness protection provided in their anti-corruption laws, but these provisions remain vague and inadequate.

The regional gathering seeks to increase the knowledge of participants about systems to protect whistleblowers and witnesses; share experiences and lessons learned from other countries, as well as identify practical priority actions for West African countries on the issues.

The event is being organized by the U. N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and the Network of National Anti-corruption Institutions in West AFRICA (NACIWA).
