Motorcyclists Appeal Against ‘Illegal’ Police Arrests
By Decontee M. Wesseh

MONROVIA, September 13 (LINA) – The National Coordinator of the Motorcyclists Union, Sam Kollie, has called for government’s intervention to curtail the “illegal arrests” of motorcyclists by police.

Kollie made the call Tuesday at the close of a two-day consultative workshop in Paynesville outside Monrovia organized by Peace Ambassador William R. Tolbert, III, for the Liberia National Police and the Motorcyclists Union of Liberia.

“Most often our bikes are arrested by the police even if we do not violate traffic rules,” he alleged.

Kollie noted that motorcycle riding is a medium of ending violence in the country, adding, “When a man is busy it becomes difficult for him to carry out ugly acts that trouble the peace and stability of the country.”

According to him, motorcycle riding is the only source of living for many young people in the country, and is something that could boost the Liberian economy.

In remarks, Peace Ambassador Tolbert pointed out that the workshop is intended to bring both groups together in a bid to sustain the peace and ensure that the lives of passengers are safe.

“Many of the cyclists are concerned about keeping the country peaceful and we must give them the credit because they have done lot of work to improve the relationship between them and the police,” he added.

He cautioned against violence, noting that violence is not the first and only option, and urged the motorcyclists to engage the ongoing process to help ensure lasting peace among citizens.

“The relationship between both parties is better than what it was in the past and we also want to carry on such program in other parts of the country to reinforce the rules of engagement and the public safety laws for cyclists to be informed and oriented about what they ought to do,” he emphasized.
